The Book, or the Blog?

So I've been writing this week, staying true to the book. And feeling guilty, I have to admit, about not blogging. After all, everywhere I look, all the advice I read, what I hear is: Platform. Platform. PLATFORM.

That's right: blog; facebook; twitter. I really enjoy all of them, to tell the truth, although not as much when they become my duty. After all, I'm a writer first, and there's this book I'm writing, right? And I'm a part time book reviewer for a magazine that has deadlines. True, there are books I want to review on my blog, as well, and author interviews I look forward to.

But, this week my muse said, "Look, here: just how serious is this relationship, anyway?"

Reader, I wrote. And I'll be writing on the book next week as well. I'll be writing on the book, in fact, until I finish this draft!

What would you do?

  1. Hi Elizabeth..though we would love to just concentrate on our books (as writers its our duty towards our WIP) but we have to build a platform via social networking sites and blogging. Its important to strike the perfect balance by devoting the major portion of our time to writing and after the word count for the day is over, get onto the social networking sites as a reward.

  2. Yes. Striking the perfect balance: That's the trick, isn't it! :-)

  3. I tell myself I'll reserve blog time to the evening and then sometimes I weaken. Having a regular schedule like a school time table would work, if I could stick to it. They say decide how many words to write on your novel a day and then the rest of the day is your own. Good advice that I'm trying my best to follow.

  5. That sounds like a good approach, Madeleine. I have a hard time committing to word count. Instead, I sludge on through chapters. My goal is something like, "I'll finish Chapter xxx today," etc. But then, I find that Chapter xxx wants to be longer than I expected, and I didn't finish it. Maybe it's accidentally a matter of word count. Hmmm. :-)

  6. I wish I could delete a comment that had misspellings in it without it looking (like above) I had said something tacky or cursed. Looks like I need to be more careful in the editing portion of comments!

  7. Hi, I came here from Rachna’s blog. I totally sympathize with you on the battle we have to face everyday – should we blog or write? I have only recently committed to writing my blog, but am trying my best to accommodate my goal of completing my third novel.
