Why I Love Spring in Sacramento

I have been too busy to post about the beautiful blooming fruit trees and magnolias that burst into bloom earlier (because, like a good girl, I have been writing, writing, writing). But Midtown Sacramento is gorgeous in spring, even after the flowering trees fade, because so many people garden, including me.

A word about my gardening approach: I am not the world's greatest gardener. My approach when I am not writing is to pull the weeds (which can be very satisfying), and — when I am writing — to decide, "Well, Nature loves weeds . . ." In other words, my gardening style leans toward "benign neglect."

But Sacramento's climate is a forgiving climate, and even under benign neglect, the flowers bloom and spread and celebrate spring in ways that just make the world beautiful.

How about you? Do you like to garden? If so, are you an avid gardener? Or, like me, a "sometime" gardener? What is your favorite season?

  4. Vicki, I think you are right. I walk around Sacramento and see gardens everywhere. But then I have friends in Walnut Creek and Berkely, and the same is true there. People here love their gardens.

  5. Rosi, I really used to garden. These days, my style is "benign neglect". All of these plants are doing what they do without any help from me. Lol.

  6. Beautiful flowers! Have never been to Sacramento but sure would like to based on your photos. I don't do much gardening mostly because we found early on a healthy batch of poison ivy (which raises blisters on me) in the flower beds; we haven't managed to get rid of it in full after all these years. But I love the potted flowers my husband tends to every year. Besides, writing calls to me more than weeding anyway :-)

  7. I concur, Sacramento is indeed gorgeous in spring. Thanks for the lovely photos. I gardened public places over 35 years and am still amazed and delighted by our city's horticultural diversity.

  10. Kenda - I'm not a great weeder anymore, either. My gardening style tends toward benign neglect and occasional pruning. and lots of chips to smother the weeds. But it seems to work. Lol. Thanks for stopping by.

Geo. - I didn't realize you did a lot of gardening around the city. There is something in Sacramento that just calls to the inner gardener!

Nas and Ann - I agree. It really is so beautiful. We are in Spain right now, and spring is just beginning here, so in a way, we are getting two springs.

Mark - I can't decide whether spring or fall is my favorite season. I go from one to the other. Right now, it's spring. But I'm sure in the fall, when the Ginko trees are turning bright yellow, I'll decide it's fall. Then spring again. Lol.
