I Have Not Disappeared Off the Face of the Earth

http://www.freeclipartnow.com/education/books/books.jpg.html

So here I am again, explaining why I haven't been blogging.

The good news is that I've been writing. And re-writing. And, yup, re-writing. And when I'm not doing that, I'm reading in a focused way that I hope will make the current re-write better. I keep thinking that any day now I'm going to blog again and write a brilliant post or at least a book review of one of the many books I've been reading. But duty calls: I get immersed in my WIP. And I need to, too! There is someone waiting for me to finish this rewrite.

I think while I'm so engaged in the WIP right now, I'll have to content myself with visiting your blogs and commenting and defer posting for awhile.

But, in the meantime,  if you've stopped by, please share what you are doing and where you are in the writing process. I'm sure others who stop by will be just as interested as I am and will want to visit your blog to learn more.

I do hope to be doing it again before too long.

Until then, write on.

  1. Hi Elizabeth! I commend you for focusing on your WIP - blogging can wait. ^_^ I am busy layering my WIP again before I send it to an editor friend. Then sometime in the fall (before NaNoWriMo) I'll send off a couple off query letters. Good luck to you!

  3. If someone is waiting, you must finish!
I'm in the middle of edits on my third book, working with a test reader on the dialogue.

  4. Hi, Alex, what a good idea! I have a critique group, but I like the idea of having a test reader to run just the dialogue by. Thanks for a good tip.

  5. Hi, Elizabeth,
I'm not writing of editing as much as I should, but I guess that will change as time goes on and my deadline looms closer.

Hope your re-write continues to go well.

  6. Hi Elizabeth. Looks like you are super engrossed and focussed on your book.

I revised my MS (which I am querying) and am also writing a new book ( the first of a trilogy)

  7. Hang in there!

I've been struggling with blogging too. Sometimes it feels like we have to put out so many words with posting and commenting and replying that we have nothing left for our manuscripts. It's seems to go in cycles though. We just have to hold on until we get the next wind.

  8. Hi, Joy, I'm like you: it's amazing how much I focus when a deadline is on the horizon. :-)

Rachna, kudos to you. You sound so productive: a revised MS and a new trilogy. Good luck with your queries!

Hi, Sonia, Yes, I've noticed when I'm so focused on the writing, I can't think of a good post, and when I'm doing a lot of posting, I don't write as much as I should. It's such a delicate balance, isn't it.

  9. Yup, I'm in the same boat! Write on!

  10. Hi, Tanya, thanks for stopping by. Hope your own writing is going well!

  11. It's good to be focused on the WIP - especially as you have someone waiting for you to finish the rewrite! Tons of good luck to you.

I'm also in rewrite land. It's getting very familiar and sort of cosy. I'm on chapter 12 - pretty much halfway. Every so often there's a burst of time and I get a little further. Every so often there's a time-sucking work vaccuum and I get a little behind. But I'll get there slowly but surely!

  12. Thanks, Jayne, and tons of good luck to you, too. Keep going. I'll be so interested to read your book when it's finished. I love your blog.

  13. Hi Elizabeth. Reading this post, and shaking my head in, um, not sure if it is commiseration or celebration. Then I read the comments. I was filled with the wonder that the writing community is. Not competitors. We are all so supportive of each other, and that is a rare thing in today's world. Nice post. Kudos to you for your focus. It is inspiring. Now, to get back to my WIP.

  14. Enjoy your re-writing. It is good to be engrossed in the writing process. I should be doing it myself. There are times when I need to stay off the blogosphere to complete my own stories. Good luck and have fun! I will miss you.

  15. Teresa, you are so right. The writing community is a wonderfully supportive community. Good luck on your current WIP.

Julia, thanks for stopping by. Hope your own writing goes well.

  16. That's what I've been doing. Writing and rewriting and doing it all again! By the time I finish I don't have the energy to blog :)

  17. I agree with what others have said. Completing your WIP is most important unless blogging is your primary focus.

I am curious, however, as to your definition and process of re-writing. Do you literally rewrite the manuscript (as in a separate document) or just revamp scenes and story lines?

  18. Catherine, that's it exactly. After all the re-writing, if I think of blogging, what pops into my head is just the fact that I've been re-writing! Can't think of an interesting post, since I used up all that writing on the WIP.

Jeff, thanks for stopping by. I actually re-write the new revision as a separate document, chapter by chapter. I copy and paste the old chapter into a new document (in a new folder, so I can keep them straight), and then I rework everything to my satisfaction; sometimes throwing out most of it if it no longer fits, sometimes combining two chapters that seem to go together now. I do that all in a new folder, and that way, I still have all the old material if I decide I want some of it back again. Once I have all the chapter to my satisfaction, I paste them all into one document called "whole book".

  19. Thanks for the explanation. I guess I'm trying to get a feel for where most people draw the line between degrees of editing, revising, rewriting, etc. I have the feeling that they may mean different things to different people.

It's a good idea to preserve your original manuscript. I know I've deleted things that I later wished I hadn't and having that backup is priceless.
